Back to Norrath…

Well, after a couple of months of no MMO’s, I finally lost it and I went ahead and downloaded EQII.  All 12.5 GB of it.  It didn’t help that my wife is going to Germany for a few weeks to visit family and friends.  I mean, what am I supposed to do with that much unsupervised time? 🙂

I haven’t played the game in quite a long time ~ in fact, if my payment history is correct, I think 2007 was the last time I set foot back in EQII.  One thing that caught me by surprise was that I had a level 37 Troll Shadow Knight on the Guk (medium pop) server just sitting there waiting for me.  He looked pretty spiffy and inviting too, just sitting there in all his shiny plate armor…  “Play me! Play me!” he seemed to say.  Sadly, I have absolutely no clue how to play him.

So… instead of sitting there for an hour or more trying to figure out my SK, after already having to endure the 12.5 GB download, I just decided to go ahead and re-roll a new character (Ranger) on the Antonia Bayle server.  It was one of two servers that showed “HIGH” populations among the 10 or so that were listed.  The other high pop server is a PvP server, so I’ll probably end up there once I get my bearings, but for now I think I want to just take it easy and “stop to smell the roses” so to speak.  Hopefully, choosing a High Pop server will provide me with plenty of folks to group with without having to join a guild.

I don’t mind guilds for the most part but I find that as I get older, I have less and less tolerance for the drama and the demands of a raiding guild or any other type of guild for that matter.  We’ll see.  Maybe I’ll get lucky and find a good casual semi-serious guild that likes to raid occasionally.

So anyway, as mentioned, I’ve rolled a Ranger on the AB server named Moejeaux.  Drop by and say “Hi” if you’re so inclined!

A Whole Lot of Nothing…

August 9, 2011 Comments off

… is exactly what I’ve been doing lately.  Aside from a really good game of CIV 5, I haven’t really touched my computer since putting in my new Video card a few weeks ago.  I haven’t even bothered to download the bundled game that came with the video card – DIRT 3.  Not that I’m a racing/driving game sort of guy, but I still like to look at what I can only surmise are really cool graphics.  Maybe I’ll get around to it this week… maybe.

About the only thing out of the ordinary that I’ve done here recently revolves around shooting.  I took my wife out a couple of weeks ago and it turns out that not only does she like it, but she’s also pretty good at it!  It’s cool to find a “hobby” that both she and I can enjoy.

Anyhow, before I log out, I’d like to welcome Girl Grey back to blogging after a long hiatus.  Welcome back GG!

And with that… I’m out!

Star Wars The Old Republic is now Available For Pre-Order..!

July 21, 2011 5 comments

That’s right folks, and in case you missed it, you can now pre-order SW:TOR!  After jumping through my a$$ here at work (game sites are blocked – imagine that!) and going through the painful process of ordering and registering my account code via iPhone, I am now the proud owner of the SW:TOR Digital Deluxe Edition.  I think the total for it was like $83… a bit steep if you ask me, but hey… it’s STAR WARS man!  That being said though, as much as I love Star Wars and MMO’s in general, I just couldn’t bring myself to pony up the $150 they wanted for the CE edition.  Not that it would’ve mattered anyway since, at least on Origin’s site the CE version was already SOLD OUT.  Cr@Zy!

Did anyone else hear/read anything about an actual release date?  A buddy told me that he had heard/read NOVEMBER 15TH….

Edit:  While looking around at the other vendors offering SW:TOR pre-orders, I noticed this on the Amazon site:

Product Details

  • Shipping: This item is also available for shipping to select countries outside the U.S.
  • ASIN: B005B8DRVU
  • Media: DVD-ROM
  • Release Date: December 31, 2011

Sooo…. is this another “accidental” slip up on the part of an online retailer?  Or just a “guess” by someone entering the data?

Well My Video Card Finally Bit the Dust…

June 29, 2011 4 comments

… so, sadly, I was FORCED to buy a new one 😉

Yep, I’m sorry to say that my old warhorse of a video card finally bit the dust Monday night.  I say I’m sorry because I now have to spend the $$ to replace it, but I’m even more sorry because I’m pretty damn sure that the expenditures won’t stop there – in fact, I’m pretty damn sure that it will end up with me upgrading some other components that are about as old as my video card – namely the processor, memory and motherboard.  More on that in a bit.

So, exactly how old was my video card?  Well, I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but given that I’m not really much of gamer outside of MMO’s and the occasional strategy or empire building game, I was still hanging on to a 3 year old nVidia 9800GTX.  Now, before you laugh, let me tell you, despite it’s age (practically ANCIENT by video card standards) the card was still holding its own, and doing it rather well; even with more recent games such as RIFT, Civ5 and Shogun II.

What killed it?  I’m guessing heat.  Unfortunately, my “man cave” is upstairs in what used to be the attic.  This space has recently been converted into an office/man cave on one end and a spare bedroom on the other end.  It’s fully air conditioned, but since the insulation isn’t all that great in some spots (mainly on the ceiling) it still gets pretty hot up there in these scorching Louisiana summers.  Anyway, long story short, my wife doesn’t like to “waste” electricity so after she’s done using the PC, she’ll leave it on, raise the thermostat back up to where it barely kicks on the AC, and then goes down stairs.  I’m surprised it has lasted this long to be honest.

So on to what am I replacing it with.  Well, after some research, a little soul searching (also known as “how much can I spend before the wife really flips out”), I’ve decided on this puppy right here:

It’s an AMD Radeon HD 6950 $(249).  It’s Tom’s Hardware’s top recommendation for cards in the mid $200’s.  If you want to do better in raw gaming performance and still buy an AMD/ATI, you’ll need to go with their HD6970 ($325+) or their flagship HD6990 ($700+).  On the Team Green side, you’ll have to go with GTX 570 ($319), 580 ($500+) or the 590 ($750+).  From everything I’ve read, the bump up to the next level card MIGHT be worth the money once games start taking advantage of the 2GB’s of memory on cards like the HD 6970, but after that you get a serious case of diminishing returns for your extra hard earned cash…. which could be better spent on such things a:

A Motherboard…..

  • ASRock Z68 Extreme4 ($189)
  • A good solid motherboard that comes highly rated on several sites that I trust – it also got good customer reviews on

  • Some might ask, why not the i7-2600k… the main reason is that you’ll end up paying $100 more for hyperthreading.  That’s it.  Your gaming experience will NOT improve because of it.

and Memory….

  • G.Skill Ripjaws X (8GB) ($74)
  • There might be faster memory out there (well, I know there is) but once again, it’s a case of diminishing returns when you go any faster.  Without benchmarking software, most people can’t notice the difference if you go faster, but your wallet might!

So there it is.  From video card replacement to pretty much a new PC (if you recycle things like case, optical drives, hard drives, psu).  Right now the only thing I’ve actually bought is the video card and that was due to my old one dying.  I’d rather have waited until an SW:TOR release date was announced before buying anything… but c’est la vie!  Hopefully I’ll be able to resist hitting the “Buy” button on the rest of the stuff until then…..

Game of Thrones: Genesis (E3 2011)

June 10, 2011 1 comment

I was wondering how long it would be before a Game of Thrones PC game came out.  I’m not sure if it’s going to be an MMO or something else.  Either way, it will be something I will  be keeping my eye on.

Holy CRAP!

If this little video of the upcoming blockbuster MMO StarWars:The Old Republic doesn’t make you want to play it (even a little) then NOTHING will.

I don’t know about you, but that smuggler had me re-thinking my choice of “main” when the game finally comes out.  Totally. Freaking. Awesome.  Excuse me while I go change my shorts….

Not Much Going On…

May 2, 2011 4 comments

And that’s either the “problem” or “beauty” with EvE.  Just depends on how you look at it, of course.  Currently, and for most of my EvE career, I’ve found that I spend waaaay too much of my character’s life AWAY from the game. However, given my lack of play time – that pace is just fine with me.

I haven’t been a total couch potato though.  I’ve been logging in here and there and running a few missions (level III’s) making some cash.  I bought myself a NOCTIS to help out with the salvaging, made some cash selling said salvage, but I’m a little dissatisfied.  The amounts I’m making are still chump change compared to what I hear one can get from running level IV’s.  Right now I’m running level III’s from a highly rated agent out of Kaunokka.  I’m actually rated with several different agents to run level IV’s but as of right now, none of them are of high enough quality to entice me to try them out.  Besides, I don’t really have a battleship set up for mission running yet.  I have a stripped Armageddon that I need to take the time to look up a good mission running build for so I’ll feel better about trying out the  level IV’s (before taking my last break from EvE I had been working on building a nice Gankeddon that I never finished).  I’ve been told I can run level IV’s in my Myrmidon, but that it could get a bit tricky and would not be as time efficient as using a battleship.

This time around I’m working on being able to fly those flashy tricked out recon ships (the CURSE to be exact) and I’ve still got a ways to go, but I’m on the last stretch.  On the bright side, I should be able to fly a NEMESIS stealth bomber within a few days.  Which is a good thing, since I’ll feel better about helping out with Corp PvP Ops.  Yep, I joined a Corp.  So far I haven’t interacted with them much since I haven’t been online, but it seems that this is a casual Corp that does a little bit of everything.

So anyway, aside from joining a Corp and working on some skills and making a few isk mission running, I haven’t done a whole lot worth writing about.  On another note, I managed to live test some of my re loads and I didn’t blow up my gun, my face or my hands.  Yay me!
